"What the epigenome remembers: past, present, and future"
Abstract: Epigenetics is a powerful mechanism of gene regulation critical in development and homeostasis. It is also known to respond to external cues, allowing cells to adapt to their environments. In this talk, Dr Herzog will discuss how DNA methylation - a layer of epigenetics directly encoded on the DNA sequence - records environmental and other exposures and how we can leverage this in epidemiological and translational studies to quantify health trajectories, biological age, and personalised disease risk. She will also discuss the potential of epigenetics to modulate cell function.

Chiara Herzog, PhD, Group Leader at the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute, University of Cambridge, UK
Dr Chiara Herzog is a group leader at the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute, University of Cambridge, UK. Her work spans computational and experimental biology with a focus on epigenetics in ageing research and cell fate modulation for disease prevention. Originally from Austria, she obtained a BSc in Molecular Medicine from Innsbruck Medical University, after which she moved to the UK to pursue a MSc and PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Edinburgh, studying the role of the innate immune system in brain repair in a highly regenerative organism (D. rerio). She has experience in the biotech and precision cancer diagnostics industry (BioClavis, Glasgow) and co-led large-scale multi-omic human intervention studies as a senior scientist at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, focusing on women’s cancer detection and prevention. Prior to joining the University of Cambridge, she was awarded the prestigious King’s Prize Fellowship and Prof. Anthony Mellows Medal to start her research group at King’s College London. Her work has resulted in clinically applied diagnostics for endometrial cancer and she has been awarded several national and international awards for her contributions to research, including most recently the American Association of Cancer Research Journals Early Career Award.
