Liver Transplantation
Liver transplantation is increasingly recognized as optimal therapy for many types of end-stage liver disease. In adults, indications include chronic active hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, sclerosing cholangitis and Wilson’s disease. Evaluation of each patient and pre and post-transplant care are handled by a multidisciplinary team of transplantation surgeons, gastroenterologists, experts in infectious disease, nephrologists, cardiologists and staff from nursing, psychiatry and anesthesiology.
Intestinal Transplantation
Intestinal transplantation is now accepted treatment for intestinal failure. Intestinal failure occurs most commonly after massive intestinal resection for a number of diseases including infarction after mesenteric thrombosis or embolism, volvulus, Crohn’s disease, familial polyposis syndromes, and desmoid tumors. Pediatric diseases leading to intestinal failure include gastroschisis, intestinal atresia, necrotizing enterocolitis, and functional disorders impairing motility or absorption. Intestinal transplantation is indicated in patients developing complications of intestinal failure such as dehydration, growth failure, loss of vascular access, and recurrent line infections. Intestinal transplantation is sometimes combined with liver transplantation in those patients with end-stage liver disease complicating their disease course. Patients are evaluated by a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, gastroenterologists, nutritionists and staff from nursing, social work, and psychiatry.
