Justin Sonnenburg, Associate Professor, Microbiology & Immunology

Justin Sonnenburg, PhD, is currently an associate professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Stanford University School of Medicine, where he studies the gut microbiota in health and
disease.   More In 2009 he was the recipient of the NIH Director’s New
Innovator Award. In 2011 he received the Burroughs Wellcome Fund
Investigators in Pathogenesis of Infectious Disease Award.   He and
his wife Erica, are the authors of the book The Good Gut:  Taking
Control of Your Weight, Your Mood, and Your Long-Term Health.

David Relman, Professor, Microbiology & Immunology

David A. Relman, MD is the Thomas C. and Joan M. Merigan Professor in Medicine, and Microbiology & Immunology, and Co-Director of the Center for International Security and Cooperation at Stanford University. He is also Chief of Infectious Diseases at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System in Palo Alto, California.  More Dr. Relman’s research focus is the human indigenous microbiota, and the identification of previously-unrecognized microbial agents of disease. He has advised the U.S. Government on emerging infectious diseases, human-microbe interactions, and future biological threats. He is Chair of the Forum on Microbial Threats at the Institute of Medicine (National Academies of Science) and Past President of the Infectious Diseases Society of America. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, and a Member of the Institute of Medicine.

Erica Sonnenburg, Senior Research Scientist, Microbiology & Immunology

Erica Sonnenburg, PhD, is a senior research scientist at the Stanford University School of Medicine in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology where she studies the role of diet on the human intestinal microbiota.  More She has published her ground breaking scientific findings related to the microbiota in prestigious journals such as The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Cell, and, Nature. She is the co-author, along with Justin Sonnenburg, of the book The Good Gut: Taking Control of Your Weight, Your Mood, and Your Long-Term Health.
